HOCKEY: Cirencester end on a high
Cirencester 1sts 1 Cheltenham A 0.
THE last game of the league season saw Cirencester entertain Cheltenham A at Deer Park School on Saturday.
With both teams mid table, the game was to have no real impact on league positions other than to determine which of the two finished above the other in the final standings.
The home side, including three up-and-coming juniors recruited from the promoted 2nds, started brightly.
Tom Groombridge, still only 13, and Jamie Gilchrist played in the midfield, with Steve Kelly partnering the experienced John Tasker up front. All three contributed to some sharp moves in the first 20 minutes.
Kelly was unlucky to be disallowed a goal on his debut when a quickly-taken free hit gave him the opportunity to sweep the ball home.
The umpire adjudged an inactive Cirencester player to be within the five-yard radius of the free hit. Despite this, the home side pushed on. Groombridge made several runs at the Cheltenham left back and from one such move squared the ball to Tasker, who fired home for a deserved lead.
While Cheltenham struggled to create any chances, the fact that Cirencester failed to convert pressure into more goals, meant that the away side was always in it.
So Cirencester finished the season on a real high, winning five of their last seven games. They finished two points from third place and only seven points away from promotion.
