GAFFER TAPES . . . Ciren Town v Team Bath

The game hinged on two chances in the second half - the one we missed and the one they scored.

Team Bath are a good side and I thought we matched them for most of the game. Bully did not have a shot to save.

But it's tough when you play well and get nothing out of it.

Matt Taylor has come in today from Oxford Utd via a loan spell at Abingdon and his miss was disappointing, but he's a young boy and it is a harsh lesson he will learn from.

It only takes one chance for a team at the top to score and again it came from a free header.

You might say why didn't we have anyone on the back post, but Bully organises the defence and I go along with what he wants. He wants a player on the near post and it's the first time in 40-odd games that we have missed having someone at the back.

We defended crosses really well tonight, so it was a bitter pill to swallow.

We were much better defensively. Al Stanley was more like the player I know, Moly was outstanding and Chris Weedon's brother Ben, who like Taylor has come from Oxford and Abingdon, had a very good debut.

He likes getting forward, he likes to tackle, he was very committed for someone on loan - he's my kind of player.

He defended one-on-ones very well and stopped crosses coming in all night. Against Team Bath away, the crosses were coming in at will.

Going forward, I thought Shax at times was unplayable. There are bits of his game he has to work on, but he has the potential to play at a higher level than this.

Sean Bailey did very well for us at times and the quality of his crossing was fantastic.

Max Etheridge had a nice little cameo for 15 minutes. He's going to be a player. He's got good upper body strength and linked up well with Robbo. He is Ciren's future and he's got to aim for the first team next season not the youth team.

Robbo never won a header in the away game, but tonight he did, and that was against Gary Warren who, along with Hendy of Clevedon, is as good a centre half as there is in this division.

Tonight was the start of our 10-game season. The challenge is to keep it going because there is nothing worse than dead games.

With Kings Lynn and Hemel to come it could all be over by Easter and obviously I am already talking to people at other clubs with a view to next season.

We need to be stronger, we need a little more know-how, and we need to find someone to score goals.

Before the end of the season, I'll be asking the core players Do you see yourself staying or going' as I need to know.

A few will have options and could play at Southern Premier level next season, but this isn't a bad non-league club at which to play.

I'm hoping we have eight or nine of the current squad ready to sign, and a settled 14 or 15 pretty quickly, so that we don't have loads of people on trial in pre-season.

looking back only to november the tigers were below us and now they are just outside the playoffs. Mr Harris has been faced with severe financial problems but has lifted his side to around 6th place. Reports of wanting to dump the whole squad and then expecting loyalty the following week is at best unbelievable!

The "dump the squad" story came in the Echo, not the local paper which follows Ciren Town more accurately. The manager's comments on players in Gaffer Tapes are, on the whole, positive. Viveash obviously wants to keep the core of his team, but whether his best players want to play a division down (less wages) will be key.
