MP Since - 1992 Majority - 12,864 Born - 23/03/1953, Divorced, 1 son, 1 daughter.
Education - Tonmore School, Upper Deal, Kent, Eton College, Windsor, Royal Agricultural College Cirencester.
Previous Occupation - Investment Surveyor (Jones, Lang Wootton 1975-79), Managing Director of a Farming Business in Norfolk (1979-) and Land Owner. Vice Chairman Charities Properties Association (1993-2002), Small Business Bureau (1995-).
Personal Overview - On the backbenches during the Major Government he was given a posting under Hague, but without public prominence, as it was in the Opposition Whips' Office, was then made a Shadow Minister under Iain Duncan-Smith, maintaining a role under subsequent leaders. His family background is in Norfolk farming, where he runs a large farm in the Gresham Hall estate. He also shares the family interest in politics; since the days of Gladstone and Disraeli he is the seventh member of the family to reach the Commons. Two members even managed to gain the Speaker's chair (Douglas Clifton-Brown 1943-51, Harry Hylton-Foster 1959-65). With such a background his pro-hunting and shooting position is virtually compulsory. Prior to taking the Whips' position and subsequent promotion, he had expressed an ongoing interest in foreign affairs and overseas development, particularly concerning population growth. With a snip over half the constituency votes, and a thoroughly split opposition, he is safely placed to continue the family's Commons record.
Political History - MP (Cirencester & Tewkesbury 1992-97), MP The Cotswolds (1997-). Chairman Conservative Back Bench European Affairs Committee (1992-95), member Environment Select Committee (1992-97), PPS to Douglas Hogg, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1995-97). Member of the Administration Select Committee (2001), (2010-11), member of the Selection Committee (2005-10), (2010-), member of the Finance & Services Committee (2005-). Opposition Spokesman for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (2001-02), for Local Government & the Regions (Shadow Minister for Local Government) (2002-03), for Local & Devolved Government (2003-04), Opposition Whip (2004-05), Opposition Assistant Chief Whip (2005).
