GLOUCESTER Choral Society (GCS) will be holding a concert at the Parish church in Cirencester on Saturday, May 6 as part of the Abbey 900 celebrations.

GCS chairman, Allen Prior said: "This is the very first time that GCS has staged a concert in the Church of St John the Baptist in Cirencester and we are delighted to present Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonnelle.

"Some of us were lucky enough to sing for a lovely wedding here in August 2015 and so enjoyed the beautiful acoustic that we were looking for the opportunity to sing a full concert – so here we are.

"And, to be part of Abbey 900 is such a great honour and makes our concert all the more significant for us.

"Written towards the end of his life, it is clear Gioachino Rossini was set on having fun with this little mass and it is, perhaps, ironic that the work is neither small (petite) nor solemn (Solonnelle); rather, it is thrilling, amusing, operatic and charming so I hope people will thoroughly enjoy the concert.”

  • The concert is on May 6 at 7pm. Tickets are available via the Three Choirs Festival Ticket office on 01452-768928 or online at 3choirs.org/event/rossini-petite-messe-solennelle1. Details can also be found on gloucesterchoral.com.
