A NIGHT celebrating the best of West African music will be held at the Subscription Rooms, Stroud next month with artist Edd Bateman.

Originally from Devon, Edd fell in love with West African culture through its music and has now released an album which includes the first mblax song composed and sung by an Englishman.

Underpinned by Edd’s pulsating bass, the scintillating sounds of the kora and marimba combine with relentless soukous guitar and subtle Senegalese mbalax grooves over a captivating Cameroonian backbeat.

Edd’s interest in this genre began in 2001 and in his new album he collaborates with musicians from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Gambia, Cameroon, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea and sings in both English and the languages of West Africa.

Edd’s show at the Subscription Rooms begins at 7.30pm on Sunday, July 17.

Tickets cost £14, concessions £12.
