EXCITING changes are happening at The Barn Theatre in Cirencester in a bid to turn it into a cultural focus for the town.

A total refurbishment of the theatre space is underway, including a new sound and lighting platform, a stage extension and orchestra pit.

The huge project, due for completion in the autumn, will include professional theatre seating, increasing capacity from 140 seats to 200 seats, new dressing rooms and new toilets, including a disabled toilet.

As well as a complete refurbishment to the theatre space, planning has been granted for an attractive extension at the front of the building incorporating a new bar area, with space for pre-show meals prepared at The Vaults next door.

The new removable theatre seating means that the venue will still be available for hire for events including weddings and parties.

Rachel Wright, co-owner of the Barn Theatre said: "At the moment we have four shows a year at the theatre. Our aim is to get a performance on at least once a month. We want the theatre to become a cultural centre. We have already started to talk to touring companies and the plan is that StageSmart shows will also come here."

Rachel is keen to stress that she sees the Barn Theatre co-existing with other venues in town. "We don't want to tread on the Sundial's toes. We are not in competition. There is room for us all.

"Everyone is saying this is what Cirencester needs."
