BOUTIQUE hotels are notoriously difficult to get right. Too modern and slick and the place seems austere; too vintage and quirky and you feel claustrophobic. But No.38 The Park finds the perfect balance.

Set in a striking Georgian townhouse facing Pittville Park and just a short walk from Cheltenham town centre, No.38 is a paradise of style and luxury.

Period features combine with modern must-haves. You can relax in the antique bathtub below the sash windows at the end of your vast bed, while enjoying the contemporary art on the wall or the full Sky package on the huge TV or music from the iPhone docking station.

No.38 is part of The Lucky Onion chain which includes No.131 The Promenade in Cheltenham and The Wheatsheaf Inn in Northleach, and a huge part of the success of the small-but-growing group is the attention to detail.

There are little touches that have become calling cards of The Lucky Onion and give the hotels that special feel - hot water bottles with hand knitted woollen covers, the own-brand 100 Acres bath and beauty products in every room, massive walk-in showers with side-by-side showerheads, an honesty bar where you can help yourself to a drink, a well-stocked library with plush armchairs and sofas.

At No.38 you can hire out the full 13-room venue to have your own getaway with friends and family, and the staff make it extra special by organising private chefs, nannies, in-room treatments, flowers, butlers and bar staff, if required.

The only downside to No.38 is that it doesn’t do evening meals, just a continental breakfast, but there is a free taxi service to and from The Lucky Onion’s nearby restaurants, such as The Tavern or the aforementioned No.131.

It is a shame that No.38 doesn’t do dinner, because once you arrive you feel so at home that you don’t want to venture out, and the dining room where breakfast is served is a beautiful space with a cosy seated patio area.

However, No.38 makes up for this with its superb style and comfort.
