Friday night was Brewery Blues Night at the Kings Head Hotel in Cirencester. Down in the Hotel Vaults is not where they store their valuables but something much more precious – musical talent!

If you have not been there then you are missing out on some amazing live music, the venue has a low vaulted ceiling reminiscent of the Cavern in Liverpool. Most important the music and Friday night was a great show.

Russell Joslin, from London performed with Sarah McCaig from Australia followed by the Elles Bailey Band from Bristol and last but not least local singer songwriter George Montague gave a cameo performance with Elles.

The evening was kicked off with Russell Joslin singing his style of edgy, extreme folk music, he was joined on stage by Sarah McCaig who sang some great harmonies and had a real clarity about her voice.

Billy’s Funeral, which was not a sad song, really showed off his skilful guitar picking. Russell mentioned that if he could only ever sing one song it would be My Blue Field of Lavender, which has a great story behind it and was a fitting end to Russell’s and Sarah’s performance.

They were at Brewery Blues last over a year ago and hope they return soon.

Elles Bailey band hit the stage running with their brand of R&B singing Wildfires with some powerful guitar playing by Joe Wilkins, thumping bass by Zak Ranyard and the rhythm of drummer Tom Gilkes.

Elles has one of those voices which is prefect for belting out the blues, one that sounds like it was fed on a diet of cigarettes and whisky although it wasn’t, she just has a great voice.

Most of the music is penned by Elles about loves lost and won (recently married) and the occasional dig at rubbish politicians and she has some great stories about her songs. You can hear some of the songs they sang on their latest EP – Who Am I To Me.

A favourite of Brewery Blues nights is George Montague who joined the band on stage to sing a ‘well rehearsed’ song written by Elles and George called What If I. I am pretty sure the band first heard the song during rehearsals but you wouldn’t have known.

Elles Bailey Band finished a memorable evening with Howling Wolf. How this band is unsigned is a mystery to me.

Next Friday is acoustic night with Folk singer Antoine Architeuthis, before George Montague returns for the next Brewery Blues on October 30. George is a rare talent and you should get down to the Kings Head Hotel to listen to his brand of music.
