NEW Brewery Arts welcomes back Robert Race for his latest exhibition of magical automata and kinetic sculpture from Saturday, September 26 .

He last came to New Brewery Arts in 2010 and made a big impression with visitors. The donation box that sits in the cafe at New Brewery Arts was made by pupils from Cirencester Deer Park and designed by Robert.

He has a long career in making things that move in a simple but interesting way.

His inspiration comes from his travels around the world in search of traditional moving toys and his work covers automata, kinetic sculpture, exhibition design and interactive collections of toys and donation boxes for museums and galleries.

His automata, which incorporate a wide range of natural, re-used and recycled materials, are a medium for conveying powerful ideas, often with humour, in accessible and thought-provoking ways.

Robert has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and has work in collections in the UK and Japan.

The exhibition at New Brewery Arts will feature ‘Getting On’, Robert’s latest commissioned work on the theme of Ageing.

New Brewery Arts, in partnership with the Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), received funding from the Baring Foundation’s Late Style Programme, to create this automaton for the enjoyment of hundreds of older people living in residential care.

Many of the work exhibited at New Brewery Arts will be for sale.

  •  An exhibition of automata and moving toys featuring ‘Getting On’ is at New Brewery Arts, Cirencester from Saturday, September 26-Saturday, October 31. 9am – 5pm. Free admission.
  •  Robert Race will be in the Gallery at 2pm on Saturday, October 10 to talk about this project and his work.
