Eric Hobson reviews Katey Brooks singing live at The Kings Head, Cirencester.

A VOICE with power and passion, songs written with great lyrics, melodies and guitar work to match. Then it must be unplugged night at the Kings Head Cirencester.

Katey Brooks was the singer and one of great quality and a pleasure to listen to.

Coming from somewhere between London, Bristol and Arizona this young lady must have packed plenty into her young life to write with such feeling about her life.

Katey is a singer/guitarist songwriter with support from Paul Quinn on keyboards. Her music roots are in folk but now sings with soul.

Katey has already performed at WOMAD, Glastonbury and the BBC as well as many other prestigious venues and after listening to her first set it's easy to see why.

Kicking off the first set with songs from her recent EP 'I Fought Lovers', she shared the background of her songs and in particular from a singing tour of Australia and about the impact of people and friends she met.

Opened the second set with Never let Her Go and Save Our Love during which Katey thought the audience was way too far from the stage and got us to move close to the stage to make it more intimate which we all did.

Great story telling between songs added more colour to her music. An encore demanded by an appreciative audience was 'Trouble so Hard'.

If you haven't heard Katey Brooks music before you can get her EP on iTunes and see her perform on YouTube.

I look forward to seeing her perform again.

The great news is that she is in the middle of recording a new album and we heard some of those songs. John Drummond found a wonderful singer to perform on Friday night at the Kings Head.
