PROMENADE Production is presenting a fully staged production of CHESS with a full orchestra at The Bacon Theatre in Cheltenham Theatre from until Saturday, July 11 at 7.30pm.
This musical is a new departure for the society not only in the style of music but also with a new production team: Daphne Herbert is directing, the musical director is David Whittle assisted by Amber Smith and choreography by Elizabeth Warner.
With music by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus formerly of ABBA and lyrics from Tim Rice, CHESS is set in the 1970s and tells the story of the chess tournament between the USA and the USSR.
The characters of the protagonists are loosely based on those of Victor Korchnoi and Bobby Fischer and the championship held in Merano, Italy CHESS the Musical also has a strong love interest – a romantic triangle between two players in a world Chess championship and the woman who manages one and falls in love with the other and features the well- known numbers ‘I know him so well,’ One night in Bangkok’ and ‘Anthem’.
