DAVID Durston is a painter and printmaker, born in 1950, who since the late 1960’s has worked and painted predominantly in Gloucestershire.

Following a Foundation Course at Gloucestershire College of Art, he completed a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed Hons) Degree at St Paul’s College Cheltenham/ University of Bristol. David subsequently gained an M.A. in Fine Art at Birmingham College of Art, followed by a Fellowship in Printmaking (A.D.A.D) at Gloscat in Cheltenham in 1987. In 1983 he became a South West Arts ‘Major Award’ winner.

From 1979 until 1988 David held the position of Head of Art at Westwood’s Grammar School, Northleach. He then took up the post of Head of Expressive Arts at the Cotswold School, Bourton on the Water, until his retirement at the end of 2010.

David Durston’s links with Cirencester are varied. He played cricket for Cirencester Cricket Club in the 80’s and early 90’s. In 1985 his art work was exhibited at The Cirencester Workshops and as a result of this he featured on the B.B.C. Points West news programme.

The title ‘Two Genres’ makes reference to the dual strands, developed in parallel, in more recent works – abstract and figurative. Painting techniques, from both styles, have served to inform each other resulting in the production of vibrant images. People familiar with Durston’s work may be both surprised and interested by his development as an artist.

David Durston: Two Genres Corinium Museum, Cirencester, on now until February 8.
