THE Rain or Shine Theatre Company present The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare at Poulton House Gardens in Poulton on Saturday, July 19 at 8pm.
From the merchants — who trade and barter on the Rialto — to a young Venetian’s choice of a metal casket in Belmont — which could win him the hand of an heiress — Shakespeare weaves a web of romantic intrigue, cunning duplicity and comical foolery.
But, is the Jew, Shylock, really that cruel? Are the merchants trading on the Rialto as respectable as they claim to be? Is the young man choosing between gold, silver and lead caskets a fortune hunter or simply a love-struck romantic?
And who is the unknown lawyer pleading for the life of the unfortunate merchant?
