Great Somerford is a medium-sized village, with a lovely walk by R Avon. Maintained by very active gardeners, two well-established three-acre gardens and two charming smaller ones with Gt Somerford's Free Gardens and Allotments. Endowed in 1809 by the village rector, these are thought to be the oldest continuously cultivated allotments in the country. The gardens offer a wide range of interest. Clematis, although small, has perennials, a collection of approx 20 clematis, herbaceous borders, shrubs and a pond. At The Mount two acres of lawns, herbaceous beds, shrubs, nuttery, large trees, fruit and vegetables and a recently created natural swimming pond. An adjacent historic house is open for viewing. Somerford House, developed over 30yrs, features roses, shrubs, old wisteria, perennials, rockery and pool, vegetables and soft fruit. The Old Police House is a 15yr old re-established acre garden with herbaceous borders, perennials, shrubs, cottage garden plants, pergola and pond. Gardening with a smile. Limited wheelchair access.

25 Bowling Green Road, Cirencester 2pm-5pm, packed with day lilies, roses, clematis, grasses, hostas and unusual perennials. Pergolas, pots and pools.

Paulmead, (combined opening with Wells Cottage), Bisley nr Stroud, 2pm-6pm, plants, one-acre terraced garden with some formal areas. Natural stream garden, and other interesting features.

Wells Cottage, Bisley nr Stroud (combined with Paulmead, Bisley) 2pm-6pm, colour and texture on several terraces; rambling roses, pond, grasses and vegetable garden with raised beds.

Quenington Gardens, near Fairford 2pm-5.30pm, plants and teas, six gardens in infrequently visited Coln Valley village ranging from exotic to organic.

Sandywell Barn House, Whittington nr Cheltenham 11am-5pm, plants and teas, plantaholic designer's own 2 1/2 acre walled garden with traditional and contemporary features.

Sezincote, near Moreton-in-Marsh 2pm-6pm, teas, exotic oriental water garden by Repton and Daniell; orangery, formal Indian garden, large trees and wooded park.

Eyford House, Upper Slaughter near Stow-on-the-Wold, 2pm-6pm, teas, one and a half acre sloping garden. Originally laid out by G S Thomas with pleasant walks (boots needed), two lakes.

Rockcliffe, near Lower Swell, Stow-on-the-Wold 11am-4pm, teas, eight acre traditional English garden with roses, herbaceous borders and topiary birds flanking path to dovecot; walled kitchen garden.

Trench Hill, Sheepscombe near Stroud, 2pm-6pm, plants and teas, three acre organic garden with mixed borders, vegetables plots, woodland, ponds, wooden sculptures and panoramic views.

Sherston Church Open Gardens Weekend, 1pm - 5pm on Saturday and 2pm to 5pm on Sunday. A selection of large and small gardens in and around the village.Tickets £5, which includes entry and tea and cake in church, are available from 10am outside Sherston Post Office and from 1pm in the lychgate. There will be a garden-related raffle and plant stall and you can try bell-ringing on Saturday from 2.30pm - 4pm. There will be visits up the church tower on Sunday, by ticket only.

Sunday, June 23:

National Rambling Rose Collection, (Henry & Susie Robinson), Moor Wood, Woodmancote, near Cirencester, 2pm - 6pm, plants and teas, two acre country garden. View 120 varieties of rambler roses from the national collection, a wildflower meadow, walled garden, sweeping lawn and orchard. Admission £2.50 per adult, under 16's free. Guide dogs only.
