Elijah Wood has gone from Middle Earth to the future with a voice role in new TV series Tron: Uprising.

The Lord Of The Rings star has been in the studio to record his role as mechanic-turned-unlikely hero Beck in the Disney XD show, inspired by the two films - 1982's Tron and 2010's Tron: Legacy.

Original Tron star Bruce Boxleitner is to reprise his role as Tron in the upcoming animated programme, alongside Mandy Moore, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Nate Corddry.

31-year-old Elijah, who reprises his role as hobbit Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit films, previously said that he loves his voice part.

"He's pretty awesome! It's cool. It's fun to play something so heroic. I was, and super-excited at the notion of them making a show that actually fit between the two film, in terms of the mythology," he told Collider.com.

Tron: Uprising is set to premiere on UK screens on Disney XD on September 10.
