A COUNTRY hotel owned by a Tetbury couple is in line for a national award.

The Bay Tree has beaten hundreds of competitors to be shortlisted for the small hotel of the year title in the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence.

Michael and Pamela Horton, who own the Cotswold Inns & Hotels collection, added the Burford hotel to their chain in 1997.

The couple said they were very conscious of the heritage and tradition that comes with the hotels. "We feel duty bound to keeping them going," said Pamela. "We’re just custodians. We look at our hotels as a box of jewels.

"They are all hundreds of years old and we are keeping them in the way we believe people want them, as traditional country house hotels.

"To make it to a shortlist of just four hotels in England is no mean feat. This is an outstanding achievement and we are thrilled."

The winner will be announced at a gala ceremony in Birmingham on April 15.
