Mum’s the word when it comes to decorating children’s rooms

Children may dream of a bedroom with Lego furniture or one that looks like their favourite playground but it seems that mum has the final word when it comes to how the room is decorated.

A survey by five star housebuilder Barratt Homes, which is building homes across Gloucestershire, reveals that mums make the decision in 50 per cent of households with children.

The One Poll survey found dads have the final say in 35 per cent of households and just 15 per cent of children are trusted with the décor decision.

“It’s really interesting to see the dynamics when it comes to decorating a child’s room,” said Barratt sales director Andrea Pilgrim.

“We know that children’s bedrooms are always among the most talked about and copied rooms in our show homes as people are always looking for bold and interesting designs to replicate.”

This year animals are leading the way when it comes to decorating a child’s bedroom. While the Blue Planet II is providing some dramatic inspiration, interior designer Richard Ornelas from Claude Hooper says that animal heads are currently one of the most popular features.

“Animals are always a safe bet with children of all ages and at the moment felt animal heads are being used on walls instead of pictures to add interest and they are easy to replace as children grow older,” he said.

“And many design houses are using jungle animals as wallpaper designs which look really exciting.”

Richard also said there is a trend towards novelty beds. “One of our favourites at the moment is a bed house which is a wooden structure in the shape of a house which can then be decorated with fairly lights and bunting.”
