Latest figures from the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service or NaVCIS, shows that there has been a 52% increase in the number of caravan thefts compared to last year. So far, this year, in total over a half million pounds worth of caravans have been recovered by Tracker.

Tracker has been leading the way in the field of vehicle tracking and telematics since 1993 and have over a million security and fleet management systems fitted to vehicles including caravans. Working with the police, they have to date recovered over £517 million worth of stolen vehicles and continues to recover on average £1 million worth of stolen vehicles each month.

Andy Barrs, Head of Police Liaison at Tracker, comments: “The latest figures show that touring holidays in a caravan or motorhome are all the rage and look set to become even more popular. However, criminal gangs see these caravans as valuable commodities to sell on, so owners need to be vigilant.”

With the Caravan and Motorhome Club predicting that touring trips among UK holidaymakers will rise to over 16.6 million and sales of caravans and motorhomes also set to rise by 18% by 2030, security should be a major priority for owners.

They recommend choosing a storage site with good security rather than just a good price or fitting security posts or a substantial gate if parking the caravan on the drive. You should always security mark the caravan with your postcode and that includes marking valuables and interior fitments inside the caravan too.

Fitting physical deterrents such as hitch locks, wheel clamps and deadlocks on doors to make it difficult for thieves is a must too and remember not to store any valuables or registration documents in your caravan.

When on site, always close and lock the doors and windows when you leave your caravan, even if it’s just for a short time. Fit a time switch if you’re out after dark, as lights on will make it look occupied and deter opportunist thieves. Get to know your neighbours on the caravan site and look out for each other’s vehicles and don’t be afraid to report suspicious activity.
