TOP-of-the-range electric guitars like those used by the legends of rock music hit the right note with bidders at a Cotswolds auction last week.

A 40th anniversary Gibson Les Paul in black – the model of guitar used by greats including George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton sold for £1,950 at the Moore Allen & Innocent auction on Friday, September 23.

Meanwhile, a distinctive angular Gibson Explorer in sunburst effect, favoured by the likes of Def Leppard’s Pete Willis, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, and James Hetfield of Metallica, sold for £1,150, as did a flame red Gibson Herb Ellis semiacoustic guitar, named in honour of the American jazz guitarist.

A selection of modern bronze sculptures of birds and animals also performed well.

A sculpture of five mallards in flight sold for £1,600 – twice the top of the £500 to £800 estimate – while a pair of oversized hounds also outperformed their £500 to £800 estimate, the hammer falling at £1,350.

A pair of lions seated on balls, in the 19th century manner, made £950 while a sculpture of five teal in flight made £750 and a pair of whippets sold for £700.

Elsewhere, the residual contents of the former Bibury Court Hotel – which has been bought as a private residence – were offered for sale, with furniture from the 18 bedrooms – which commanded an £800 per night room rate – proved particularly popular.

A Victorian mahogany break front wardrobe compactum achieved £420, a shabby chic Chemoa painted pine buffet confounded expectations, selling for £550 against a £150 to £200 estimate, and a Victorian oak and carved settle in the 17th century manner sold for £190 – slightly above estimate.

Ornaments from the grounds of the former hotel also proved popular with bidders, with three staddle stones making £170, a pair of composite stone rectangular troughs on twin pedestal supports achieving £260, two further troughs selling for £300, and a composite stone bird bath, a composite stone gnomon and a composite stone balluster sun achieving £320.

In all, more than £60,000 worth of antiques were traded.
