Monthly Auction Sale of Antiques and Objets D’Art

The British Legion Hall, Bourton-on-the-Water

HANNAH Barlow, a very well-known late 19th century decorator/artist working for Royal Doulton was quite well represented at the sale with no less than three particular Lots bearing the hallmarks of her work.

Perhaps one of the most revered of the Doulton Artists, she is known for her Sgraffito incising (basically running a tooling knife into wet clay) of various animals and these include horses, donkeys, goats and sheep.

Lot 27 came in the form of a rate and large Doulton Lambeth stoneware Jug rather unusually decorated with a large horse putting up ducks, the piece found a favourable reception with the local trade at £280.

Whilst a little while later a slightly smaller pair of Vases (with restoration) managed just a little more at £300.

The sale itself was categorised by a specialist antique and modern clocks and watches section and although not reminiscent of the heady prices perhaps of a few years ago several Lots are worthy of mention here.

Lot 229, a good early 20th century brass cased circular ship’s clock signed Henry Browne & Son Ltd, sailed away at £200 whilst £520 was achieved for a fine quality gentleman’s yellow gold cased Omega Seamaster Automatic Chronometer wristwatch within a box.

Longcase clocks seemed very good value indeed and just £160 was enough to secure an early 19th century oak cased 30 hour example distinguished by the fact that it was signed by a local Witney maker.

Once again, jewellery was fairly selective although £1,300 was tendered for a very fine quality Art Deco style ladies ring centrally set with a large emerald and diamond surround and the day’s top price was reserved for a very fine pair of ladies sapphire and diamond earrings, each earring consisting of three sizeable sapphires (approximately two carats each) and also surrounded by diamonds, a private client here took the prize at £1,850, still a very reasonable price broken down constituent wise.

Furniture sold well enough although it is true to say there were no great surprises here.

Top honours reserved for this section went to a late 18th century George III period mahogany chest on chest having a brushing slide.

Although with veneers away and in need of general refurbishment and perhaps a re-polish, never the less the item was good looking enough to warrant a £440 bid from a local gentleman.

Later on in the sale hand knotted Eastern rugs were making on average £100 whilst stoneware consisted of a Staddlestone at £150 and a Staddlestone Base at £70.
