HOMEOWNERS and businesses adopting the DIY approach to pest control this summer could find themselves stung in the pocket.

A mild and wet winter followed by warm conditions throughout May and June has prompted fears of a bumper season for insects.

But pest experts say anyone attempting to tackle an issue themselves could be making an expensive mistake.

Basis Prompt, the nationwide register for qualified pest controllers, insists home treatments are rarely effective and can lead to bigger problems down the line.

Chief executive Stephen Jacob said: “It’s easy to see why people choose the least expensive option to rid themselves of an infestation.

“But the treatment of pests, including the removal of wasps nests, is often complicated and specialised and a problem can get out of hand if people try to deal with issues themselves.

“Millions of pounds are wasted on failed home treatments every year so ignoring the professional approach just to save money can prove to be a false economy.”

Basis Prompt is an industry initiative which provides independent proof that a pest controller has received proper training and continues to update their expertise.

Mr Jacob added: “Unqualified traders can land householders with huge bills for jobs that are often only half-finished.

“Our identity card is widely recognised as a symbol of quality and professionalism. It helps expert pest controllers to stand out from the crowd.

“All technicians on our database are fully qualified and up to date with the latest products and techniques, so homeowners can be sure anyone carrying the card is exactly who they say they are.”
