ANOTHER notable and very successful monthly auction sale was held at the Royal British Legion Hall, Bourton-on-the-Water on Saturday, April 16, by North Cotswold Auctioneers, Valuers and Estate Agents, Tayler & Fletcher.

About a tenth of the 650 lots put up for sale were consignments of garden statuary, stoneware and furniture which were sold outside of the auction room even during an unexpected snowstorm!

Despite the apparently ominous weather, bidding was spirited and this perhaps reflected the bidders’ optimism that we will experience a fine summer.

Meanwhile, within the warmth of the saleroom itself, almost six-hundred lots were sold at a tremendous pace by auctioneers, Martin Lambert and Edward Bagnall - in just under six hours.

Firstly, the 125-lot Pottery and Porcelain section was offered and then fifty lots of Glassware, followed by seventy lots of Jewellery and one-hundred varied entries for Collectables and Bijouterie.

In the Clocks and Watches section, a large 19th century slate, marble and bronze-mounted eight-day mantel clock with a bell-striking French movement, its key and original numbered pendulum seemed like a very good buy at £95, but what made it really stand out was that alongside the clock itself sat a bronze Renaissance scholar, book in hand, with a further pair of books at his feet. So not just a clock – a piece of sculpture as well.

One of the many interesting pieces of furniture which were put up was a reproduction Barcelona chair, which was knocked down to the trade for £190. Designed by the Bauhaus director, Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich, it is so called because it was first exhibited in the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona.

The chair’s form is thought to derive from the Curule, a Roman folding upholstered stool.

The following photographs are a selection of items that will be offered at our forthcoming sale of Antiques, Selected Furniture, Chattels and Estate Clearances that will be held at The Royal British Legion Hall, Bourton-on-the-Water on Saturday, 14th May at 10.00 a.m.
