BUSINESSES across the Cotswolds are being urged to talk about mental health on World Mental Health Day today.

Senior members from 2gether NHS foundation trust, NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group have been visiting businesses to talk about the issue.

A campaign to encourage more of these talks got underway early this week with a visit to Star Bistro in Cheltenham. On World Mental Health Day itself, last Friday, Gloucester Rugby players and staff lent their support.

Depression, anxiety and stress caused 15 million days of work loss in the UK in 2013, and many staff feel too embarrassed to speak up and seek help.

The aim of the campaign it to get all Gloucestershire businesses tackling stigma and talking about mental health.

Chairman at Gloucestershire CCG Dr Helen Miller said: “We can help our employees to stay well, both physically and mentally, with the right knowledge and skills.

“Maintaining good mental health is really important, particularly in the context of a rapidly changing world and pace of life."

Rob Rees, The Cotswold Chef of Star Bistro was the first businessman to be visited and said: “We ignore mental health issues at our peril. I would encourage more employers to be more flexible and understanding when difference occurs amongst their staff.”

The campaign will culminate with a conference in Cheltenham open to all businesses on Monday, November 10.
