Mosiac art showcase at Corinium museum

ANCIENT meets modern in a perfect setting when 20 contemporary mosaic artists showcase their work at Cirencester's Corinium Museum.

From April 1 to June 4, the mosaicists provide interpretations of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, in an exhibition organised by artist and writer, Robert Field.

The museum is the ideal venue for the event entitled Mosaic Seasons - Ancient Meets Modern, as it boasts one of the finest collections of Romano-British mosaics in the country.

In Roman Britain, the four seasons became one of the most common themes displayed on the mosaic floors of villas.

The Corinium has a magnificent example from the floor of an elaborate town house, laid in the days when Cirencester was Roman Britain's second largest town, with a population of 15,000.

Robert Field, whose own work features in the exhibition, said: "The changing seasons and how artists interpret their moods have fascinated and inspired since the dawn of time.
