THE vicar of Cirencester, the Rev Michael St John-Channell, has been head-hunted by Winchester Cathedral, leaving the capital of the Cotswolds is on the look out for a new vicar.
Father Michael announced to congregations this week that he would be taking up his new position in the ancient capital of Wessex but church-goers need not panic just yet. He is not leaving until June, when he will become canon and vice-dean at the beautiful cathedral.
He told the Standard: "It is a very exciting job, very different from here. I wasn't looking to move but I was offered the position and I found it too good to turn down."
The 53-year-old admitted he was unable to resist the move and is very excited by the prospect of being in charge of Winchester's famous choir.
Father Michael is a renowned singer and told how he cannot wait to be involved with the church music in the Hampshire city.
He added, however, that he is sad to be leaving Cirencester, where he has settled down so well.
"It is very much my home and I've begun to put down roots here," he said. "I was not looking for a job but this is an excellent position."
Speaking fondly of the people of Cirencester, he added: "They're brilliant. Some are quite reserved but they are wonderful people when you get to know them.
"Cirencester itself has a real sense of community and it is a lovely place to live and people have been very friendly."
Town mayor Norman Whereat has been quick to praise Father Michael for his hard work and dedication over the last eight years.
"I am very sorry he is going," he said. "I think he has been a terrific asset to the parish church.
"It's definitely a case of our loss is someone else's gain and I really think he deserves the promotion. I wish him the very, very best of luck in his new job."
Father Michael's replacement has yet to be decided but will made by the Bishop of Gloucester in conjunction with the churchwardens and council at Cirencester.
