Local boy Reed stays on winning streak

CIRENCESTER'S Peter Reed, a member of the Men's GB Coxless Four and 2005 World Champion, won the Individual Sportsman title at the 2006 Combined Services Sports Awards.

The awards brought together the cream of Britain's military sporting elite to honour those who have reached the pinnacle of their sport during the past year.

Peter Reed, who won the 2005 World Championships and was a member of the Varsity Team in the 2005 University Boat Race, took the individual sportsman title.

He beat off challenges from the Army's Scotland Commonwealth Games Cyclist Cpl Duncan Urquart and the RAF's World Junior gliding champion, Flt Lt Mark Parker.

Peter, who has his sights on greater things, said: "I'm now thinking of the 2008 Olympics.

"The team would really like to carry on the tradition of Britain's coxless fours in Beijing at the Games.

"But, before that, we have to defend our World Championship title at Dorney Lake, Windsor, in August this year."
