Sherston

CONTESTANTS with good appetites are invited to join in Sherston's annual pancake-eating competition at the Carpenter's Arms on Shrove Tuesday at 7pm.

Participants in each heat will be served four freshly-cooked pancakes on a plate, and whoever polishes them off first will go into the next round.

The winner will have their name engraved on a special commemorative frying pan.

The event is being organised by local community service group Sherston 1016, named after the year of the Battle of Sherston.

"We started doing this competition about three years ago, and it's always been a fun evening," said Richard Langley, spokesman for the group.

"Lots of people could not take part in a traditional pancake race in the street because they are at work during the day. Having the event under cover and in the evening means more people can join in - whatever the weather."

Each competitor pays a £2 entry fee. For more details, contact Mr Langley on 01666 840112 or 07879 612776.
