Chance to check out David Hockney

ANYONE expecting brightly-coloured pop art representative of his early work, like his Los Angeles swimming pools, is in for a surprise when seeing David Hockney's interpretations of folktales by the brothers Grimm at the Swindon Arts Centre from February 18 to March 18.

Rather than illustrating the stories literally, the most famous British artist of his generation chose vivid, often dark, images to encapsulate a mood or detail. These etchings, illustrating six fairy tales, were produced in 1969.

Some of the tales are familiar, like Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin. Others, such as Old Rinkrank, Fundevogel and the Little Sea Hare, are little known.

Entry to the exhibition is free; 10am-5pm Monday to Friday and 10am-1pm on Saturday.
