Cirencester stroke volunteer recognised

AN 81-YEAR-OLD woman who has been helping stroke victims in Cirencester for more than 20 years has received an award from the Stroke Association.

Renee Wright, who has been involved in nursing care for most of her life, set up the Cirencester Stroke Club in 1982.

The club currently has around 30 members, all of whom benefit from the attention and hard work of Renee.

And Cotswold District Council leader Sue Jepson presented her with the GB Stroke Association commendation last Monday.

Renee said: "I feel very honoured. I think the accolade should go to the members themselves as well as all the volunteers."

The Cirencester Stroke Club relies on the generosity of various carers who help get those who have suffered a stroke back on their feet.

Renee said: "Our aim is to get people once they have left hospital back into the community and improve their quality of life.

"We have a loyal team of helpers and we try to do a variety of things - there is a great deal of satisfaction in what we do."

Stroke victims are given physiotherapy and remedial exercises, as well as help with communication.

Word games, art classes and computer courses are also made available, while t'ai chi classes are even starting soon.
