London, New York, Milan, Paris... Cirencester.

Esther Barron watches as college students take their first (catwalk) steps into the world of fashion.

Gypsy skirts, paisley prints and even leg warmers graced the catwalk when students from Cirencester College strutted their stuff for a charity fashion show.

There were long and short skirts, frilly tops, denim, crocheted outfits and shorts and shades, all from fashion stores in the Cotswolds and modelled by male and female students aged between 16 and 19.

Despite having few rehearsals, they put on an impressive two hour show at the Sundial Theatre in Cirencester which included dance routines choreographed by student Becky Woolvern.

The show, called Vision, was organised by 17 year-old Emma Jacob, who is studying for an international baccalaureate at Cirencester College. The course includes a section titled Creativity, Action and Service and students have to organise an event that will benefit the community.

Emma hopes to work in the fashion industry when she leaves college in a year's time and already knows a bit about her chosen career as her uncle is a fashion designer based in Dublin.

"I would like to be on the management side of the fashion industry," said Emma, "I would love to organise fashion events and do the PR.

"As part of my studies I thought it would be great experience to organise a fashion show locally that would benefit the community. I thought it would be nice to support Cirencester Hospital."

With help from fellow students Helen Fickling and Vicky Barnett Emma set about getting the show on the road and approached fashion stores in Cirencester and the surrounding area to see if they would feature their clothes.

"The shops were really supportive and keen to get involved. We then held open auditions at college to find our models. Lots of students came along and I tried to get as many of them involved as possible."

Around 30 students modelled clothes from Cirencester stores New Look, Jungle, Burton, KMP Clothing and Wardrobe. There were also fashions from Clobber and My Fair Lady in Nailsworth and Slippery Nipple in Stroud.

Beauty therapy students helped do the make up on the night and hair stylists from Aqua in Cirencester were on hand to sculpt hair into sleek styles.

"Everything was really last minute and spontaneous and it went really well," said Emma. We didn't even have time to have a dress rehearsal.

"We had no funding but with support from friends and people around me it was amazing what we achieved. It has really inspired me."

When she graduates Emma will spend time working with her Uncle before trying to get a job in the fashion industry.

The event raised just over £600 for Cirencester Hospital League of Friends.
