Drivers test skills at Kemble

LORRY drivers from across the region had a wheelie good time this week at a special driving workshop.

Truckers descended on Kemble Airfield on Tuesday to take park in a safety training day run by International Road Safety Training Ltd (IRST).

They had the chance to take part in a programme teaching emergency avoidance techniques to stop rollovers and jack-knifing.

Managing director Anna Henderson said: "The training day went very well. "We take up to 12 drivers for our one day course, with two hours spent in the classroom and the rest of the day all practical stuff.

"We teach drivers to become aware of how easy it is to roll a vehicle and at how low a speed it can happen.

"It's all to do with centre of gravity, speed and radius."

The IRST programme uses a specially adapted lorry which is filled with water to simulate a full load.

The vehicle also has stabilisers to allow drivers to practise techniques without fear of rolling the vehicle. For more information about IRST call 01727 844678.
