Paperlady still going strong after 30 years

THE Standard's longest serving paperlady is still going strong after 30 years of service.

Every Friday for the past three decades Betty Mustoe has delivered papers on her bike to the village of Leighterton.

Betty, 63, explained the early morning deliveries don't really bother her.

She said: "At the moment I must be going through a phase, I'm usually up at about six anyway."

She went on to say she used to deliver the daily papers as well but gave it up because her paper bag was too heavy to carry on a Saturday morning.

Betty said the best part of her paper round was meeting people and getting to know all the familiar faces in the village.

Although sometimes meeting their dogs isn't so great.

"A dog bit me, a couple of years ago. I had to go to hospital to have it dressed. I had to take a stick with me after that, " she said.

Betty admitted the winter months were hard sometime but the bright summer mornings made up for it.

"The birds are singing and the ducks are out waiting for bread if you've got any," she said.

Rain or shine, Betty has seen it all on her paper round over the past 30 years and she intends to carry on delivering The Standard as long as she is able to do it.
