TV star launches tug of war challenge

OLYMPIC medallist Sharron Davies took on Fairford's finest firefighters as the hunt began for the toughest tug of war team in the South Cotswolds.

The TV star, who recently moved to the area, will be presenting the prizes when the Walnut Tree Field is transformed into a battleground on Sunday, May 15.

The competition is the first of many fundraising events taking place this summer to raise money for the St Mary's Church development appeal.

Organiser Ed Mawle said: "There's a fair amount of interest already so it should be good fun, but it's a case of the more the merrier.

"We will have two ropes going at all times and a commentator and judges - there will also be a wellie throwing competition and a beer tent."

Twenty teams are already entered in the competition, with categories for sports clubs, non sports clubs, ladies and youth teams.

Prizes will be available for each category and the overall winners will receive a cheque for £200.

But you don't have to be a muscleman to enjoy the day as there will be plenty of other entertainments on offer.

The day will even be rounded off with a resurrection of the legendary Fairford Duck Race on the River Coln at around 4.30pm, with another £100 in prizes.
