AN orphanage in the heart of Africa which provides food and education for around 380 children is thriving thanks to the people of the Cotswolds.
But, this week, an appeal is being made for more sponsors to dig deep and give generously to the charitable cause.
Anthony and Eve Trevorrow, who live in Albion Street, Stratton, first heard about the Bala Orphanage in Kenya three years ago.
Moved by the plight of so many children who had lost their parents, the couple became heavily involved in raising funds to improve the orphanage's facilities.
Eve said: "The orphanage was chanced upon by Suzanne Pillans, who is from Oxfordshire but was working in Africa.
"When she first arrived all that existed was one mud hut, which was used for everything, and some of the children were only eating once every two days.
"She was really struck by the total sense of misery - but things have really changed over the years.
"Through fundraising and donations the accommodation now consists of two classrooms, an office, a cooking hut, new loos and a security hut at the gate."
One reason why the orphanage has been able to progress so rapidly is because the charity set up in its name has no administration costs.
All the money sponsors donate goes directly to the children.
Whether it's a lump sum donation or a small monthly contribution all funds go towards feeding, clothing and educating the youngsters.
Eve, who visited Bala with her family last year, said: "The atmosphere is fantastic over there. The children were so bubbly and cheerful.
"I think the Kenyans as a race are very lively and outgoing and they have a wonderful sense of humour.
"But you could also see the sadness in the faces of the children. They are so family orientated and they make the very best of their lives.
"Visiting Bala was a humbling but uplifting experience which we would not have missed for the world, but without new and continued sponsorship the children would have no education, food and no future."
All the new buildings at Bala are very basic, but the children now have vital tanks for fresh water as well as two spacious classrooms for learning.
A trustworthy and dedicated team of teachers and helpers is also in place and ready to channel all donations into the welfare of the youngsters.
To sponsor a child at the Bala Orphanage call Anthony or Eve on 01285 885323 or write to them at 39 Albion Street, Stratton, Cirencester, GL7 2HT.
