College defeats holders to reach this year's Trophy final

CIRENCESTER College defeated the current ESFA College Trophy holders Southgate by two goals to nil to reach this year's final.

In last week's tie, played at the Corinium Stadium, Cirencester dominated from the start with midfielder Lee Salter outstanding and had several opportunities to take the lead.

After a fine move down the right, the impressive Marcus Hall crossed to the near post for midfielder Dean Stow to flick the ball into the net, giving the hosts a 1-0 interval lead in this Wednesday afternoon encounter.

The visitors made all five substitutions during the second period as they tried desperately to apply pressure on the home defence.

However, the Cirencester defence held firm, restricting their opponents to long crosses and shots from outside the 18- yard box.

Cirencester's Ryan Blanche thought he had scored when he side-footed the ball into the net at the far post, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul throw.

But minutes later, Marcus Hall increased the home side's lead when he scored at the far post from a ball headed on by Matthew Green to secure their place in this year's final.

Cirencester will now face either Bilborough or Middles-brough in the final at Chesterfield FC on Monday, April 18.

This will be Cirencester's fifth cup final appearance, having won the trophy on four previous occasions.
