Highworth fly to the top of the Premier Division table

THREE victories in just five days has elevated Highworth Town into the number one position in the GLS Hellenic Premier table.

On Wednesday evening of last keep, Carterton Town, historically one of Highworth's bogey teams in the Premier Division, were well beaten on their ground by four goals to one.

For this important game, Highworth manager John Fisher was forced to make a change in the line-up with Justin Miller having been injured whilst playing for the Greyhound in the semi-final of the Wilts Sunday Cup competition.

In a series of first-half attacks, the visitors were denied by some excellent goalkeeping.

The second half, however, saw Highworth's dominance turned into numerical superiority with Phil Corcoran scoring a hat-trick in the ten minutes between the 50th and 60th minutes.

The only fly in the ointment for the Town was the withdrawal Paul Cooper to an ankle injury.

But Carterton's chance to get on the score sheet from the penalty spot was thwarted by an excellent save by Highworth keeper Elliott Jackson.

The Wiltshire side's lead was further extended by a fourth goal from Lee McMullen, who has returned to the Town's ranks after a protracted spell at Hungerford Town.

Scoring was completed in the last minute of the game with Carterton gaining a consolation goal.

Last Saturday, Highworth destroyed visiting Hungerford by six goals to nil.

Phil Corcoran scored a hat-trick with goals in the 11th, 16th and 53rd minutes and there were two for Justin Miller on 59 and 88 minutes.

And a goal by recent signing from Witney United, Kevin Coles, right on full time completed the rout.

Away to Pewsey Vale on Monday, it was more a case of after the Lord Mayor's show as it proved a real struggle for Highworth.

Nonetheless, they finally got their three points in a 2-1 win with goals for Saye (7th) and Miller (88th).

This Saturday (3pm ko), Highworth Town visit Ardley United and, next Tuesday evening, they are away to Chipping Norton (7.45pm ko).
