FAIRFORD RFC maintained a proud record in the district's senior club cup competitions with a 19-5 win over their Stroud Nomads hosts in Saturday's semi-final.
In a stunning start by the visitors, Adam Phelps, at outside-half, with excellent support from centres Gubb and Knight put full-back Aiden Messer in for two tries in just 15 minutes, one of which was converted by Chris Tanner.
Rocked by these early scores, the Nomad forwards knew they were in for a hard afternoon.
As they increased their efforts, the opposition's defences was tested to the full and a sterling effort was needed by all eight forwards.
Steve Brown stood tall and he was ably supported as last-ditch tackles were made by Little, Treacher, Sloan, Chambers, Robbie Brown, Biff and Juan.
As half-time approached, Fairford's confidence increased as the Nomads could find no way through to breech the defence.
And a break upfield left Fairford in a good attacking position.
When Gubb broke through the middle for a try, which was converted by Rich Hadgkiss, a comfortable 19-point lead had been established by the interval.
The visitors brought on replacements Rosco and Jamie for the second half and, again, the home team pressed, but the Fairford defence held firm.
Going into the last 15 minutes, Fairford moved into their opponents' half and the Nomads began to concede penalties.
Although none were turned into points, the clock was running down. And a consolation try right on the whistle was all the home side had to show for some hard work.
Fairford were left looking forward to the district final which will be played in Stroud on Sunday, April 24.
