Cirencester RFC lose out to Painswick in District Cup

CIRENCESTER RFC first team conspired to lose a Stroud District Cup match on Saturday that they seemed to have complete control of before suffering a painful loss against old rivals Painswick.

In a first half dominated by forward exchanges, Cirencester should have been out of sight, but held only a 15-3 lead, following three missed kicks at goal.

Continuing impressive league form, Town's pack dominated the scrummages whilst a combination of Wood, Crouch and Williams held sway in the line-out.

After young fly-half Martin Crouch slotted a penalty, the visitors increased their lead with an unconverted try from coach Myles Ferris, who was unstoppable from five metres.

Although the hosts reduced the arrears with a penalty, Cirencester extended their lead on the stroke of half-time when good ball from the forwards gave Martin Crouch space to dart through the gap to score under the posts. Ian Barber added the two points.

Following a couple of key substitutions by Painswick, the second half was almost a role reversal territorially, although Town still held sway at the line-outs.

Not helped by the enforced withdrawal of the inspirational Ferris, the visitors gave away the initiative, conceding two soft tries in quick succession.

Unable to create opportunities, The Whiteway team spent much time on the back foot.

Despite the introduction of all three subs, they were unable to stem the tide and Painswick capitalised with a further converted try and a penalty to win 23-15.

Cirencester return to league action on Saturday, April 2, when they play their final home game against Old Bristolians.
