Honoured Army march through Cotswolds

IT'S one of the proudest days in our local regiment's history and YOU are urged to turn out en masse to help it celebrate being granted the freedom of the district.

South Cerney-based 29 Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corps was due to parade through Cirencester today to mark the landmark occasion. Cotswold District Council chairman Sue Jepson was scheduled to present officers with the honour, in front of a host of local dignatries.

This will be followed tomorrow with parades through Tetbury, Northleach and Chipping Campden.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Sean English said: "Granting of the 'freedom' is a tremendous privilege for us all in the regiment. It is very much a mark of the strong and enduring relationship that we enjoy with the civilian communities within Cotswold district.

"Both Cotswold District Council and 29 Regiment RLC are delighted to see members of the local community who would like to attend these especially memorable events.

The 'freedom' has been awarded to cement the close relationship the Cotswold district shares with its only regular local Army unit.

Troops were due to parade through Cirencester Market Place at 10.30am, accompanied by the Royal Logistic Corps Band and a colour party, carrying flags, rifles and bayonets.

A church service was then due be held at St John the Baptist Church. Tomorrow, similar parades will be held in Chipping Campden from 9.30 am, Northleach from midday and Tetbury from 3.30pm.
