CUSTOMERS have been saying a fond farewell to two of the South Cotswolds' most popular shops this week.
Tetbury bakers E& J Phillips Ltd are set to close on Saturday after 135 years serving the town, while in Cirencester, the popular Jeroboams fine food shop shut on Tuesday.
The news marks the end of an era as both businesses had built up a loyal client base over the years.
Teresa Francis, who has run E & J with her husband Michael, says they are sad to be closing and paid tribute to their customers.
She said: "It's very sad. It's been a big decision to make because we are an old established family business.
"We've had a job getting people to work through the night and Michael's been working long hours for a long time now.
"We've got a good customer base who've been absolutely devastated. It's been very hard for us."
The firm was founded in 1870 in Silver Street by the grandfather and great uncle of John Phillips, who retired from the business 18 years ago.
The company then moved to its present location in Church Street and continued to expand.
Teresa and Michael Francis, who has worked for the firm for 40 years, became directors after John Phillips' retirement and have run the business since.
The company also operated a shop in Malmesbury, which closed last year.
Mrs Francis, who is the current chairman of Tetbury Chamber of Commerce, says the couple will continue to live next to the bakery.
She said: "We're looking forward to doing some travelling. We're looking forward to spending more time enjoying life together."
Mrs Francis also plans to continue playing a part in the chamber of commerce, although a new chairman is due to be elected in April.
