Swindon in upbeat mood after beating Stockport

SWINDON Town ended a turbulent week at the County Ground with an emphatic 3-0 win over struggling Stockport County on Saturday.

A trio of second-half strikes within three minutes of each other were enough to send the visitors packing and secure a vital victory for the Robins.

Manager Andy King felt his players' performance spoke volumes at the end of an extremely difficult few days.

He said: "You have to let your players do the talking. There was a little chorus of 'King out' from my favourite people. All of a sudden, we get the goal and there's a response."

As for the match as a whole, King was delighted with the way his players attempted to get the ball down and entertain.

He said: "It was down to them to play for the club, for themselves and perhaps for me in a sense.

"I thought we were dominant in first half: all we needed was that break."

Indeed, that break came from the unlikeliest of sources, namely the right boot of Matthew Heywood, and from then on, strikes from Sean O'Hanlon and Grant Smith rounded off a comfortable win for the home side.

This Saturday sees Swindon travelling north to face Oldham Athletic who currently occupy 16th position in League One.

Jermaine Johnson is likely to provide a potent threat for the Latics, but Swindon will be confident of keeping him at bay as Jerel Ifil returns to the fray to strengthen the Town defence.

But Christian Roberts, who remains as Town's only major injury doubt, is unlikely to return until well into February.
