DJ on song for national award

A CIRENCESTER DJ has scooped a top national radio award. Simon Grout, 21, took the BBC1 gold award for best newcomer 2004 at the National Student Radio Awards.

The prestigious award was presented by radio DJs Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley in November.

Simon, who studied chemistry and molecular physics at Nottingham University, cut short his backpacking travels around Thailand when he heard the news.

He was one of six through to the finals after submitting a five-minute demo tape.

"I didn't expect to win, but I'm glad I flew back now. My radio presence obviously came across as quite natural," said Simon.

The award recognises the contribution of student radio and helps those talented enough to break into the world of radio.

Simon, who has a passion for funky house and progressive trance, first got into music in his teens.

"I got my first decks at the age of 16 and then I started DJ-ing at clubs in Bristol and later in Nottingham.

"Then I got into radio because my friend was the station manager for URN - the student radio for Nottingham which broadcasts across the city," he added.

Simon started out with a night slot on his own and progressed to a more prominent slot on a joint show, which features guest mixers from clubs around the city.

The former Ingleside School pupil now plans to use his talents to gain radio employment in Australia before entering the British radio industry.
