Savage recalls sunnier climes on a cold day for cycling

AS Frank Savage led a seven-strong Corinium Cycling Club group along the Whiteway at a steady pace on Sunday, the dismal weather was soon forgotten as he told of his pedalling exploits in sunny Portugal.

The party eventually turned to ride down the lovely Coln Valley before making its way to Lechlade.

At the Garden Centre, they found Peter and Barbara already enjoying elevenses having ridden out by a more direct route.

Suitably refreshed, the party split into three - one group going on to lunch at Bourton and the other two returning home at differing speeds.

Peter Stevens, John Skinner and Peter Holden headed north out of Lechlade, past Little Faringdon, through Eastleach and over the downs to Barrington.

Once there, they faced a long climb up to Rissington airfield before a swift descent through Great Rissington to Bourton-on-the-Water.

As the town was busy, they pressed on swiftly to Guiting Farm Park but, on finding this closed, they quickly cut across to The Farmers' at Guiting Power.

With time now pressing, the trio took to the saddle to head back to Cirencester via Salperton park, Compton Abdale - with its steep hills and slippery roads - and final climb up through Chedworth woods before a dash down the Whiteway.

The three riders arrived back in town by 3.40pm with over 60 enjoyable miles on the clock.

This Sunday's club run to Lydiard Park in Swindon will set off from the Cirencester Parish Church at 9.30am. The faster ride will depart from the same location at 10am.
