Sharron lights up Lechlade

LECHLADE sparkled with festive magic when celebrity Sharron Davies switched on the Christmas lights on Thursday night.

People packed into Market Place to see the television presenter add a little festive spirit to the town.

Mayor of Lechlade Mike Cawsey said: "It was a very successful evening. There was a good crowd.

"Sharron said how she had come back from Hong Kong and was suffering from a cold.

"She also spoke about her family and the move to the area, and was delighted she could walk to the shops and pubs and her children could walk to school without being chauffeured."

The evening started with a torch parade from St Lawrence Primary School. And when Sharron, dressed in a leather and lambswool coat, was introduced to the crowd, the eldest girl in the school presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

Sharron's youngest daughter Grace was also present and she was given gifts by the school's two youngest pupils.

Mr Cawsey added: "This was the first time we did not have a mock switch and everything went to plan.

"Other attractions included Santa Claus giving out fluffy toys and sweets to primary school children at the library, raffle tickets were sold by the Lion's and the scouts served hot mulled wine."

In the past the lights in Lechlade have been switched on by Fiona Fullerton, Rory Bremner and Lady Apsley.
