THIS top-of-the-table Hellenic Premier clash versus Didcot Town, played at The Elms on Tuesday evening of last week, thoroughly lived up to all expectations.
Witnessed by crowd of 202, a season's best so far, the contest proved exciting up to the final whistle and, although at times commitment overrode skill, the result was a fine advertisement for Hellenic League football.
In the first half, honours were shared fairly equally and, with no score at half-time, the match was there to be won.
However, within some four minutes of the restart, the balance shifted to the Town when Justin Miller showed excellent skill to control, shoot and score.
As the second half developed, Highworth began to gain a level of control and, despite the beat endeavours of Didcot, chances were at a minimum.
With the visitors throwing everything into attack whenever possible, Highworth's chances began to develop, and only last-ditch defending - which at times stretched the very limits of the laws of Association Football - prevented the hosts from adding to their lead.
And come the final whistle, Didcot had relinquished their unbeaten record while Highworth had consolidated their position at the top of the Premier Division.
Having now completed roughly 40 percent of their league programme, Highworth can look forward to a satisfactory final position in the table.
Last Saturday, Highworth Town defeated their Purton hosts 4-1 in the first round of the GLS Hellenic Challenge Cup.
For the second round of this competition, Highworth has been drawn away to either Almondsbury Town or Witney Utd for a tie set to be played on December 18.
This Saturday's Premier League match sees Highworth home to Bishop's Cleeve, 3pm.
For next week's mid-week league game, Highworth Town are to visit Shortwood United on Wednesday, 7.45pm ko.
