McCleery sets quickest time in Corinium Cycling Club time trial

FIFTEEN riders competed in the latest round of Corinium Cycling Club's season-long, ten-mile time trial series.

Unusually, they were met with a headwind on the outward run, which affected most riders' times in last Thursday's event.

But this failed to slow down Corinium's top man at the moment, Alasdair McCleery, who excelled once again by timing in the fastest with 23min 23sec.

One of the best rides of the night came from Lee Piercy who clocked 23.43 for second place.

The next position proved tight with Andrew Smith and veteran Allan Norwood pushing all the way to the line for third place with Andrew ending on top just four seconds faster in 24.00.

Other rides saw new member Marcus Eales doing well at 25.38 and, following his recent absence, Stephen Gooch was back with 25.42.

Other times are Gerald Peppin 26.47, Melvin Packham 27.18, Stephen Chapman 27.25, another PB from new member Tonje Haugen 28.08, vet Mike Appleby 28.49, Rob Barry 30.02, new member Peter Stevens improving to 30.04 and mountain-bike rider Terry Barry 33.42.

Veteran John Howells recently recorded a 4.52.00 in a 100-mile TT whilst Allan Norwood recorded his fastest time since 1999 when finishing in 21.54 at Antelope RT's ten-miler at Poole.

This event was won by ex-Tour de France rider Shaun Yates who recorded 19.12!

On the touring front, a date for members' diaries is Sunday, October 3, when the club is set to join the 'Gridiron', a 100km randonee through the New Forest from Lymington via Beaulieu to Nomansland.

Approximately 500 riders are expected on this beautifully scenic ride.
