68 players compete in Cirencester Golf Club's annual charity day

JOHN Parsons and John Lafford played hosts to 68 players from various clubs from around the county at Cirencester Golf Club's seventh annual charity day.

As serving captain at Cirencester, Mr Parsons nominated his chosen charity, the Cirencester Opportunity Group, to benefit from the day's proceedings.

In the end, the occasion raised £1,000 for this group and will go into the fund to be presented later in the year.

The day's golf competition saw ten holes of Texas Scramble in the morning and 18 holes of Individual Stableford after lunch.

The Texas Scramble was won by the team of Bob Hadley, Simon Parsons, Shaun Morgan and Brian Kelly with a score of 29.5.

This total narrowly beat the team of John Lafford, Mike Smith, Dave Marshall and Dave Jones who finished with 29.6.

In the individual stableford, which included some strange rules, the winner was Andy Brereton with an impressive 38 points.

Sandy Rich finished with 36 points, beating Peter Stone into second place on countback. The final prize winning position was taken by David Warden with 35 points.

An enjoyable day was rounded off with an excellent dinner with guest speaker Sam Collins, captain of Cotswold Hills Golf Club.

The winners of the club's annual Centenary Putter competition all receive a hand-crafted Auchterlonies putter as part of their prize.

This year, the winners were Craig Mayoh, Bill Daley and Katie Leith. Mayoh won Division One with a score of nett 65 to beat Gerald Park by two shots.

Lawrence Taylor edged out Evan Drayton into fourth place on countback, both finishing with 68s.

In Division Two, Bill beat Bob Challens by one shot with a nett 65 while Tony Frape and David Dickson took the next two places with scores of 67 and 68.

In the ladies' division, Katie won by two clear shots with a nett 69 from June Lamble.

Janet Biles and Lee Collins tied with nett 72s, with Janet taking third place on countback.
