HOWARD Strawford has stepped down as 'clerk of the course' at the Castle Combe racetrack after occupying the position for 35 years.
To mark his lengthy and unstinting service, the 68-year-old owner of the famous Wiltshire circuit was presented with a signed framed photograph of one of the all-time greats he most admired, Stirling Moss, by Ian Danaher (chairman of BRSCC South West Centre) before the start of last Saturday's meeting.
Clearly moved by this kind gesture, Mr Strawford was for once lost for words. Howard told the Standard:
"I first got actively involved with motor sport in various capacities when I lived in Wales.
"When I had to move to the Bristol area because of my job, I was keen to keep my interest in motorsport going, so I wrote in offering to help in any capacity they cared to chose for meetings at Castle Combe.
"I was amazed to receive a quick reply on one particular Thursday, asking me to officiate in the capacity of RAC steward, as the position was then known, for my first official meeting that was due to held just two days later!"
That was the start of Howard's long and happy association with Castle Combe, a circuit he loved so much that be became its owner five years later.
"It was incredibly hectic in those early years, particularly as was used to run up to 28 meetings a year," Howard explained.
He continued, "I think I've done my bit after 35 years and, though I'm sure I could go on for a bit longer, I feel it's time to stand aside and let a younger man take over.
"I've thoroughly enjoyed my role and have made many friends over the years.
"I also think that my regular walking stints around the circuit, especially on racedays, has helped keep me fit over the years."
