Wiltshire ladies golf team has completed a remarkable treble

WILTSHIRE Ladies County Golf ladies second team have completed a remarkable treble, beating all three counties in their South Western sub-division for the first time.

Hot on the heels of their wins against Monmouth in June and Gloucester on August 1, the team completed a grand slam by beating Glamorgan five games to four at Creigiau Golf Club on Friday, August 6.

Once again it was a predominantly young team who took the honours for Wiltshire that included Sue Newman (Ogbourne Downs), Roxanne Roberts (Wrag Barn), Claire Hobbs (Cumberwell), Emma Breen and Karen Gosling (Marlborough) and Jo Jo Candy (Manor House, Castle Combe).

The team had mixed fortunes in the morning foursomes with Emma and Claire scoring Wiltshire's only point.

But in the afternoon, Wiltshire proved the stronger in the singles by taking four of the six scratch matches.

Sue played really well but just lost a tough match against Glamorgan's 2.5 handicapper Holly Watkins, whilst Karen battled well but was beaten on the 15th by Glamorgan's captain.

Claire, Roxanne and Emma showed great determination in very hot conditions to win their matches and then, in the last match out on course Jo Jo Candy clinched hers with an excellent win on the 17th to secure a final 5-4 victory for Wiltshire.

A delighted Sue Dix, County vice-captain, said: "Once again, this had been an excellent team performance from players who work hard on their own game but are also very supportive of one another.

"These are qualities that are going to be of great value in their efforts to secure first team places in the future."
