Competition at South Cerney proves fierce for model car racers

ROUND two of the TD construction championship took place at the Duke of Gloucester Barracks in South Cerney on Saturday.

The classes raced are 1/10th scale electric and nitro-powered model cars and the Cotswold Model Car Club, which is affiliated to the BRCA, uses their rules to govern the racing.

The electric class uses 27 turn electric motors to keep the costs down and competition is evenly matched. The nitro class uses 2.5cc two-stroke engines which run at up to 40,000 rpm.

Each group - nitro and stock - has two sections, so qualifying for the A final is always hard fought. In stock, top qualifier was William Holloway with 15 laps in 5min 4.311sec, a mere two seconds better than the next driver.

Nitro's top spot was won with a four-second difference by Doug Tanner (18 laps 5-6.73s).

The stock B final was won by nine-year-old Jamie Nash with ten laps in 4-52.83s while stock A final was led from the off by William Holloway.

However, Neal Vater was only a few seconds behind and waiting for a mistake, but Holloway held on to take the win with 15 laps in 5-1.068s.

The nitro B final suffered from computer problems and, after a restart, Brian Hook took the win from Ian Coates. The nitro A final, though, was 15 minutes of concentration and mechanical mishap.

Mike Nash drove a consistently quick race to come from a starting position of seventh to take the lead after 15 laps and hold on to win with 49 laps in 14-57.014s.

Saturday's scheduled meeting has been changed to Sunday (June 20) to the town centre in Chipping Sodbury. Ring Doug Tanner 01285 651251 for details,
